Harry Belafonte Blasts Bush in Venezuela

The outspoken and courageous singer and activist Harry Belafonte recently lead a delegation to Venezuela in support of Hugo Chavez that included Princeton University Professor, Cornel West and Actor, Danny Glover. The delegation meet with President Chavez for 6 hours on Saturday, January 7th and then appeared on the President’s national radio and television broadcast on Sunday.

During the visit Belafonte expressed solidarity with the people of Venezuela and told a crowd that “millions of American” also support Chavez and his “socialist revolution”. Belafonte has been an outspoken critic of the Bush Administration and in particular Collin Powell and Condi Rice. Belafonte admonished the Bush Administration for trying to overthrow the Chavez administration and called President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world". Belafonte went on to critisize mainstream corporate media for it's unfair and incidious portrayal of Chavez.

Chavez expressed solidarity for the struggles of people of African descent in the United States and Venezuela and reiterated his own administration's commitment to ending discrimination at home.

According to Seattlepi.com Chavez accuses Bush of trying to overthrow him, pointing to intelligence documents released by the U.S. indicating that the CIA knew beforehand that dissident officers planned a short-lived 2002 coup. The U.S. denies involvement, but Chavez says Venezuela must be on guard.

Ethnic Cleansing of the Lower 9th Ward? - Residents of New Orleans 9th Ward Go Head to Head with Demolition Crews

Residents of New Orleans’ severely devastated Lower 9th Ward where called into action last week as a demolition crew contracted by Mayor Nagin’s Administration tried to begin bulldozing homes. This was in violation of the city’s pledge and court sanctioned agreement not to begin any such action until after the case for residents was heard in Civil District Court.

Attorney for 9th Ward residents, Tracie Washington working on behalf of the People’s Hurricane Relief Fund and Oversight Committee placed herself between angry residents and demolition contracts and stop them in their tracks. Next Washington will go to federal court to ask a judge to stop the action altogether citing a law that prohibits the destruction of personal property without the consent of the owner.

Many residents have not yet returned to the 9th Ward however vigilant neighbors are protecting their belongings. Since the disaster the city of New Orleans has not developed any clear plan for determining which homes will be demolished until today. According to the New Orleans Times Picayune, the city release a list on Jan. 5th of more than 1,900 homes it says are in imminent danger of collapse, most of which are in the Lower 9th Ward, but as of yet there is no word on whether there are current plans to still demolish those 1900 homes.

It many seem to outsiders that demolition is the only logical action, but for the residents of the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans it constitutes ethnic cleansing. Some might suggest that the term “ethnic cleansing” is hyperbole in this situation but what else can it be called? When people’s property and ancestral homes are destroyed and they are prevented from continuing their lives in New Orleans. What would it be called when the cultural and political ramifications of the razing the homes of the Lower 9th Ward would result in a new ethnic and class majority in the city? New Orleans has the oldest community of African-Americans in the country. Many families have roots that go back more than three hundred years--preceding the Louisiana Purchase. Let the picture on the left serve as a reminder of how and why we got to New Orleans.

The same old story of currupt multi-nationals and politicians threaten more genocide - Since 1998 more than 3.3 million people, mostly woman and children have died and yet the Congo remains the forgotten conflict. This time it’s our other shiny things that are causing Africa problems. It’s the same old story of greedy multi-national corporations after Africa’s resources. This time it is spurred on by a sudden increase in the price for Congo’s new “black gold”, coltan [columbite-tantalite (Fe,Mn)(Ta,Nb)2O6] a variable blend of iron. Because of its super-conductive properties it is essential in the manufacture of our cell phones, laptops, nuclear reactors and other technological marvels to which we have become so accustomed. This enormous worldwide demand for consumer electronics put a strain on the supply of tantalite ore. Prices soared to hundreds of dollars per kilogram. Coltan is so completely integrated into our everyday lives that it is virtually impossible to boycott.

There have over the past few years been several UN Panels that have published reports on the unethical and criminal practices of several multi-national corporations engaged in mining or purchasing these minerals. One report found that 85 companies had violated international norms [what ever those are?], including the Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises promulgated by the Paris-based Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in connection with their purchase of key natural resources from parties engaged in fighting in the DRC. The UN Panel called on governments to place financial restrictions on 29 of the companies and impose travel restrictions and other sanctions against more than 50 specific individuals. In January, 2003 the Security Council approved a resolution strongly condemning the illegal exploitation of natural resources in the DRC and demanding that all governments act immediately to end those abuses however they continue to do so even now some three years later.

On a local level what usually happens is different groups begin to vie for control of the areas where the coltan can be found by any means necessary including conflict. With abject poverty as the motivator thousands of men rushed to the jungle to mine coltan and constant conflict ensues as different groups fight for the richest ground to mine. At the conflict's height, at least seven foreign armies were involved in the war in the DRC.

Yes, it is a familiar story. We could in fact take the DRC out of this story and replace it with Sierra Leone, Liberia or Angola. The weak, elderly, women and child are forced into refugee camps and camps for internally displaced people. This leaves very few opportunities for the weak, women and children to work and prostitution [female, male and child] becomes an important part of the economy and spreads the AIDS virus. The mining destroys the land, ruining it for further agricultural or pastoral use, destroying the habitats of local wildlife and forcing the population to use wildlife as a source of constant food. Since 1998 it has been estimated that at least 3.3 million people have died in the Congo and more that 2.5 million people have been forces from their homes because of conflict in the Congo. Yet we hear nothing about this genocide. It seems to be a circular problem of reoccurring devastation as soon as the world stops looking.

Because of the mineral rich area’s proximity to neighboring countries like Rwanda and Uganda it also gives incentive for raiding from those countries. Of course the instigators and opportunists multi-nationals, support these conflicts by trading weapons and cash for coltan as the governments [western and eastern] that have jurisdiction over the affairs of these companies and their business practices turn a blind eye. With lots of money to spread around for political control, government officials, politicians, and military commanders forget their fiduciary responsibilities and special interests rule the people. The corruption of unrestricted capitalism poisons any possibility for stable independent good governance [democratic or otherwise] by the indigenous population how can we make sure that we [because what hurts any one of us, hurts us all] are not being exploited in the process.

If we can buy products for our bodies and hair with “No animal experimentation” on the label we should be able to make a purchasing choice knowing that no human beings have been exploited. We at Rootznews are not saying that everyone should stop using cell phones and laptops but we are saying that they are not worth the destruction of Africa. We can start by not living for the “Bling Bling” things in life. You can’t eat, drink or breathe them. They only have value because we give them value. We need to know that minerals are fairly traded and people’s lives have not been exploited for our convenience and luxury. According to Lancet Medical Journal 38,000 people a month are dying in the DRC.

Nearly three months after the devastation suffered in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, residents have still not received the assistance they need to return to their communities. On Dec 10, 2005 the citizens of New Orleans rallied to demand their rights to return to their homes.

Several organizations including the New Black Panther Party, N’COBRA, the Millions More Movement, New York Solidarity Committee, the Million Worker March Movement, the Mississippi Workers Center for Human Rights and many more have combined their efforts to assist residents and created a coalition to investigate and create some oversight into the distribution of relief be it financial or otherwise.

The residents of New Orleans are not happy with the help they have received to date and have accused FEMA of racism and The Red Cross of corruption. Organizer and resident Malcolm Suber remarked to a crown outside New Orleans City Hall, “This government left us here to starve and to die. We are here to stand up and fight to ensure we get what we deserve”.

While the government has purportedly allocated billions of dollars for “citizens” affected by the hurricane, FEMA has not yet come to their aid and threatens to cut off aid it has provided in the form of trailers in the near future. Yet some how the Bush Administration had the hubris to re-hire the incompetent, callous FEMA boss Michael Brown as a consultant, and pay him the same salary he would have made had he not been fired. So anyone out there that thinks Kanye West was hasty in making the statement heard round the world, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people” think again. Kanye West had amazing insight and clarity when he made that passionate statement.

On December 6th at congressional hearings angry residents described being trapped in temporary shelters where one New Orleans resident said she was “one sunrise from being consumed by maggots and flies.” Another woman said military troops focused machine gun laser targets on her granddaughter’s forehead. Others said their families were called racial epithets by police. But when Congressionman Shays (R) Conn. accused the grandmother that testified about the machine gun incident and Dyan Cole French "Momma D" of being disingenuous and "speeching in tougues" when she described hearing an explotion prior to the breach of the 17th Street levy the debate got very heated. The soft tone of Congressman Shays' voice did not hide the venom and racism in his statements. You'll think they're testifying about 1955 and Jim Crow was in full effect when you hear the indignities they were made to endure as people of African decent. Watch Momma D put Congressmen Shays and Miller to shame.

Perhaps this is why residents are now shouting racism and genocide at FEMA and the Bush administration and setting up their own organizations for oversight on any funds that where supposed to be for the residents of New Orleans. However, we would be remise if did not point out that other organizations such as the The Red Cross, which raised millions for hurricane victims, that have not lived up to the challenge of providing relief. The Red Cross was one of the prime sources of public and private donations for hurricane relief. Celebrities and performers from all over the world used television, radio and the Internet to raise money for Red Cross relief—so what happened? Show us the money!

Clearly the response in the distant aftermath is as negligent, callous and hypocritical as the response in the immediate aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Our politicians, members of the Congressional Black Caucus, state and local politicians have no power in the one party state that we have become.

As usual the White man giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other. They are using the same “corruption” argument they use for not providing promised aid to New Orleans that they've used in developing countries in Africa, South America and Asia and have the arrogance to refuse aid from Venezuela and Cuba. They keep talkin’ about the money, but as usual, it ain’t comin’ and power concedes nothing without a demand!

We at Rootznews advise anyone wanting to assist the residents of New Orleans and the Gulf not to donate to any organization that has not proven to be a true advocate of the victims of hurricane Katrina. Stanley “Tookie” Williams (1953 – 2005)

“An innocent man died today”, was the cry of the witnesses to Stanley “Tookie” Williams execution as they left the execution chamber at San Quentin Prison in California. Tookie could have easily admitted to the crimes he was convicted and kept his life, but he chose to go to his death rather than admit to crimes he did not commit.

For those of you who are not sure who Stanley “Tookie” Williams was, he was purported to be a co-founder of the notorious Crips gang, which originated in Los Angeles. Many of us might know him because actor Jamie Fox gave a brilliant performance as Tookie in the film “Redemption”. Tookie’s execution was carried out in the wee hours of December 13, 2005, which coincidentally happened to be the birthday of Jamie Fox. We are sorry it's such a sad day for all of us.

Rootznews believes that there was sufficient evidence to stay the execution of Stanley "Tookie" Williams, but the Governor of California; Arnold Schwazenegger (or the Terminator) killed his first real man. This was no movie. It was no joke, no "quiet on the set". It was a real human being that deserved a chance to prove his innocence. If anyone knows anything about the Crips Gang it is that they were an organization grounded in making money and they had plenty of it. So what was Tookie doing robbing a convenience store and burglarizing a home?

Tookie’s supports have vowed to continue their fight to prove Tookie’s innocence. A man that truly showed the world what redemption was all about. Ironically, the infamous Charles Manson who has admitted to mass murder sits in a California prison and will never be executed for his crimes.

"Bling Bling" The Trouble with Lion Mountain

When Sierra Leone was returned to the control of the diamond monopoly in 1998, it was far from the end of the story for the people. The struggle to break free from successive governments that has been co-opted by the monopoly is still in the hearts and minds of those in Sierra Leone who truly know what “The Trouble with Lion Mountain” is. The trouble with Lion Mountain is that all of its old guard politicians have been cooped and corrupted by the diamond monopoly [or what ever they choose to call themselves].

The two major ruling parties of the country have since independence dominated the political landscape of the country. Now as the 2007 presidential election approaches, it seems that the country is no longer willing to settle for the corruption and cronyism that has long plagued the country and they are searching for an alternative. It has been almost eight years since the Civil War was declared over yet the country still suffers from chronic poverty, no viable infrastructure, no opportunity for the country’s youth and a government that is infected with corruption. In a recent visit to Sierra Leone by the Secretary General of the UN, Kofi Annan, he reiterated the need to combat the underlying issues that caused the war in the first place. It’s to bad that he didn’t call on the monopoly to do more for the country. But then Kofi is still in the doghouse for disagreeing with Bush/Blair cabal about the war in Iraq and diplomacy keeps him from identifying the true culprits and those most responsible for corruption in Sierra Leone even though he knows the truth.

Well, we now see a population in Sierra Leone that is not very happy with the progress made by the ruling party since the end of the war and the signs of trouble are being to percolate. The country is still mired in poverty and the monopoly is still mired in avarice, still taking away this small country’s greatest resource and giving back absolutely nothing, not even helping the amputees who deserve a trust fund as recommended by the truth commission. I wonder just how many people would be chanting “Bling Bling” or “Diamond Is Forever” if their advertisers posted pictures of people with no arms and legs in their ads. It is ironic that a product marketed as the ultimate symbol of love is actually the ultimate symbol of death and despair in Africa.

The two major mining towns in the southern and eastern provinces of Sierra Leone, Bo and Koidu have always been a litmus test of the political climate in the country. Bo has also long been considered the stronghold of the current ruling party the SLPP. However lately it seems that another party has emerged in an attempt to break free of successive governments and political parties that have been corrupted by the monopoly. A new political party the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) a largely youth based constituency headed by Charles Margai seems to have a strong foothold in the town of Bo. In addition, the town residents seem to be disenchanted or at least considering parting with the ruling party’s candidate for President, the current Vice President, Solomon Berewa. Apparently there was some trouble in Bo Town when a group of supports from Margai’s PMDC surrounded the Vice-President’s car in the center of town, which proved to be very embarrassing for the Vice-President. The Vice-President believed they meant him bodily harm and has charged Margai with attempted assassination, but we contend that if that was what they wanted they would have done so. There were perhaps 6000 or 7000 PMDC supports that could have easily overpowered the Vice-President and his security if they wanted to do so. Heaven know that Berewa’s supports are notorious for mob violence. Berewa on the other hand is still reeling from the embarrassment of being accosted in his stronghold of Bo. We at Rootznews think Berewa might be a little paranoid. He’s been such a wicked and vengeful man that he should have been tense and fearful that his wicked deeds might come back and bit him in the butt. Lucky for Berewa the PMDC were not violence and vengeful like Berewa’s and his party thugs. Eventually, Berewa and his security all left the scene safely. However, a short time later Margai was arrested by the police along with a few others followers. He was later released on bail when it seemed that the entire town might explode into a violent confrontation that the police in the town were not equip to handle.

We will remember that is was Vice-President, Solomon Berewa [then the Attorney General] who reminded everyone that the death penalty was part of Sierra Leone’s colonial history and something to be proud of just before the mass execution of the “Freetown 24” [even though Sierra Leone’s colonial master has long since abolished the death penalty as inhuman and barbaric]. It is this kind of leader, a leader that has been cooped by multi-national corporations like the monopoly and imperialist governments that are the problem in Africa. They have created no opportunity for youth because they could not care less about Africa’s youth. They care only about the bottom line— their own personal profit.

The second incident that presented itself this month was the hit and run murder of a young bike rider in the diamond rich eastern province town of Koidu in the Kono District. Apparently the young man’s fellows from the Bike Riders Association heard rumors that it was a vehicle belonging to the non-government organization (NGO) Worldvision that hit the young man. The bike riders in a rage proceeded to attack the compound of Worldvision looting all property in the compound and burned three of the NGO’s vehicle before the true culprit a Lebanese diamond dealers decided to turn himself in at the local police station.

While these two events may not seem to be related what they show is that tension is building among the population, especially the youth who are feeling hopeless again. In the seven years since the end of the war there are still just as few opportunities as there were before the war. The only hope for any young person of modest means is to slave away in the diamond pits for a cup of rice a day. It is therefore natural to see a population unhappy with the status quo in government.

The monopoly and the other multi-national companies mining rutile, bauxite and other minerals in Sierra Leone have made many promises that of course have not been delivered. The country is still lacking the basic necessities we in the developed world take for granted. These recent acts of what we at Rootznews would call displaced aggression are the product of the oppression the people of Africa have long suffered from.

We at Rootznews will be paying very close attention to the upcoming elections in Sierra Leone, which promise to be very interesting as other new political parties emerge for the 2007 presidential and parliamentary elections. We are hopeful that this election will be peaceful and free the majority of people from the virtual slavery the monopoly has placed them under thereby preventing any further conflict from occurring.

For those of you who are not sure who Stanley “Tookie” Williams is, he is purported to be a co-founder of the notorious Crips gang, which originated in Los Angeles. Many of us might know him because actor Jamie Fox gave a brilliant performance as Tookie in the film “Redemption”. If you haven’t seen the film find it and watch, but please do it before it is too late. Tookie’s execution is scheduled for December 13, 2005, which coincidentally happens to be the birthday of Jamie Fox. Jamie Fox says, “The only present I want from the Governor is Clemeny for Stan Tookie Williams.

Whether or not Tookie committed the crimes for which he was convicted is not a concern for us at Rootznews. What is of concern is that the death penalty in the United States is used disproportionately on people of African decent and with the development of DNA evidence it has come to light that many African-Americans on deathrow and already executed did not commit the crimes for which they were sentenced to death. Yet the infamous Charles Manson who has admitted to mass murder sits in a California prison and will never be executed for his crimes and they have the nerve to try and send another African-American to death. Their excuse is a legal technicality in that the death penalty was not in use at the time of Manson sentence. But we do not want to hear it at Rootznews. If a beast like Charles Manson can live out his natural life in prison than so can Noble Prize Nominee Stanley “Tookie” Williams. You know if Charles Manson were an African they'd have quartered him before his trial.

To this day Tookie maintains his innocence of the crimes he was accused. He faced racial discrimination throughout his trial, as have many other African-Americans in a court system that has consistently done so against people of African decent. The prosecutor in Tookie's original case removed three African-American jurors from his jury. During Stan's trial, this prosecutor made stealthy racial remarks in his closing argument, comparing Stan during the trial to a Bengal tiger in the zoo and stating that a black community - South Central Los Angeles - was equivalent to the natural "habitat" of a Bengal Tiger.

Because there have been so many mistakes and erroneous conviction many states have either abolished or called for moratoriums on the use of the death penalty. Many innocent people have gone to their deaths and no matter how many were truly guilty of their crimes, one innocent person is too many. As of April 2002, 100 people on deathrow were declared not guilty with the help of DNA evidence. That is too many mistakes to continue with this barbaric practice. Every other so-called developed nation in the world has abolished the death penalty as cruel and barbaric. Now it is time for us to do the same. To Governor Schwarzenegger we say that not even in his home country of Austria do they execute human beings. To Marie Shriver we say, remember that you are a Kennedy and we urge you to prevail upon your husband to do the right thing and grant clemency to Stanley “Tookie” Williams.

All around the world it’s the same song. Another African on his way to an untimely death. This time it’s Tookie Williams, but next time it could be your son or daughter, brother or sister , husband or wife,father or mother. It matters not that he was nominated for a Noble Prize. It matters not that he has spent the greater part of his life discouraging young people from joining gangs. It matters not that he has never admitted guilt for the crimes that sent him to deathrow. If given clemency Tookie Williams will not go free, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars for those of you who believe that he is in fact guilty. The Association of Black Psychologists calls Africa’s debt: An Illegitimate, Odious, Immoral Fabrication

The News Journal of the Association of Black Psychologists, August/September 2005 issue got serious on Africa with an article by Randolph Potts, PhD. Dr. Potts’ article went straight to the heart of the matter when it comes to Africa’s debt by calling it an “illegitimate, odious, immoral fabrication”. In the article Potts lays it all out for the layperson to understand just how neo-colonialism has taken shape in Africa. He points out that most African countries have long ago paid the principle for their loans and other debts but are still obligated to pay several times the original debt in interest.

Here is a little of what he said:

Debt contracted by neo-colonial and other repressive regimes, incurred to strengthen these regimes and enrich their foreign benefactors is illegitimate and odious. Such an unjustified financial yoke only serves to sustain European influence over African governments and compromise the well being of African People.

Debt that cannot be repaid without grossly impairing a country’s ability to meet its health care needs, and devastating its prospects for economic growth, is illegitimate and immoral. As Mwalimu Julius Nyerere has cautioned, “Must we starve our children to pay our debts?”

Debts that have been imposed by creditor governments and banks, and continue to grow because of skyrocketing interest rates, are illegitimate and unjust. The original debt (the principle) has often already been repaid many times over, so the continued existence of a debt burden is illegitimate. For example, Nigeria originally borrowed $5 billion from foreign institutions. It has paid back $16 billion but still owes $32 billion on the same debt (Africa Action, 2004).

In essence Africa has been given a sharecropper deal by its colonial masters after declaring “independence” in much the same was enslaved Africans in America were given sharecropper deals after “emancipation” keeping the majority of former enslaved Africans in poverty for another hundred years[as the whole world saw in New Orleans]. Africa’s “debt” is an illegitimate, unjust, subjective fabrication, constructed to facilitate continued control over African people while providing the exploiting institutions and governments with a veneer of legitimacy.

Veneer is right. Underneath it all Africa’s creditors are just common loan sharks that could not get away with this kind of financial wickedness in their own countries. Potts uses the Congo and South Africa as examples of debt time bombs. He suggests that neo-colonial heads of states in the 1970’s like Mobutu and the apartheid regime of South Africa received aid and borrowed heavily just after independence, in the case of Congo (or Zaire) and in the last 15 years of the apartheid regime in the case of South Africa. South Africa used these finances to fund their regional wars, which forced its neighbors to incur billion in debt as well. Other countries with vast natural resources like Sierra Leone and Liberia borrowed heavily and mortgaged their resources and can now boast of being the poorest countries in the world. How could this be you might ask when the multi national corporations that control their resources have such vast wealth. Can you imagine countries like Sierra Leone and Liberia with gold, diamonds, platinum, rubber, fertile farm lands that could yield three crops a year would have starving and sick people everywhere and be ranked among the poorest countries of the world.

As millions continue to die from HIV/AIDS in Africa, most countries are spending more annually on debt repayment than they are on much needed healthcare for their citizens. They are also being force by lending institutions like the IMF and World Bank under programs like SAPA (Structural Adjustment and Poverty Alleviation) to continue to privatize infrastructure like water, power and communications to foreign nationals making those that already live in abject poverty have to pay of the essentials of life.

Potts brought out that in December of 2004, the United States cancelled 100 percent of Iraq’s $4.1 billion dollar debt. He pointed out that at the ceremony Colin Powell remarked that lifting the “crushing burden of the old regime’s debt is one of the most important contributions we can make to Iraq’s new beginning”. Hum, former Secretary of State, Powell never said anything like that about Africa’s debt. Or did he, if so it’s doesn’t come to mind? But we know that would never happen. As Dr. Potts brought out in his article African countries need to benefit from the lifting of crushing debt of previous regimes Powell spoke of. We will give Powell the benefit of the doubt. During his tenure as Secretary of State he did take interest in the genocide in Darfur, as well as the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS [the neo-cons had a field day on his for that]. However, Powell’s report card on Africa was at best a disappointing and a telling reminder of his “conservatism”. Singer, Civil Rights Activist and Pan-Africanist, Harry Belafonte feels otherwise about Powell and has on several public occasions spoken in the strongest terms about his disappointment with Powell’s performance on Africa.

The momentum to cancel all of Africa’s debt is gaining speed and many countries, organizations and individuals are moving for the complete and total cancellation of all of Africa’s debt now. It was a scam to saddle Africa with the yoke of slavery. We will continue to cover progress on this paramount issue for Africa’s true independence from its colonial and imperial masters until it is done. The way we did it in the United States until Jim Crow was done. The way we did it in South Africa until Apartheid was done. And then as the great Kwame Nkrumah once said we must never take money from them again. The cost clearly outweighs the benefit.

This law, referred to as the "Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act;" Act No. 15 of 1998, is so broad that many of the estimated 4,000 South Africans currently in Iraq, whether engaged with private security operations or even rendering humanitarian assistance, may find themselves in contravention of the Act and subject to prosecution when they return home. The penalties are severe. Contraventions of the Act may incur a fine of up to R1,000,000, ten years imprisonment, or both. In addition, South African courts are empowered to confiscate any military equipment, arms, ammunition, vehicles, boats, planes, or any other property used in mercenary activities from convicted offenders. The law applies equally to South African citizens and those who reside in the country but who are not citizens. The Preamble to the Act is drawn from section 198[b] of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa which stipulates that
... the resolve to live in peace and harmony precludes any South African citizen [or resident] from participating in armed conflict, nationally or internationally, except as provided for in the Constitution or national legislation. In order to implement aspects of this provision and in the interest of promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, universally, it is necessary to regulate the rendering of foreign military assistance by South African juristic persons, citizens, persons permanently resident in the Republic and foreign citizens who render such assistance from within the borders of the Republic.
The law specifically prohibits persons under its jurisdiction from participation in the armed forces of foreign states, the armed forces of a foreign state and dissident armed or other armed groups, or any foreign military assistance. This is broadly meant as military assistance to a party to the armed conflict by means of advice and training, personnel, financial, logistical, intelligence or operational support, personnel recruitment, the provision of medical and para-medical services, and the procurement of military-related equipment and material.

The "Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act" further prohibits the provision of security services for the protection of individuals involved in armed conflict or their property - and any action aimed at overthrowing a government or undermining the constitutional order, sovereignty or territorial integrity of a state. Given the South African government's strong opposition, in conjunction with most other countries in the world to the American-led war in Iraq , private security contractors and trainers who are residents of this country may well find themselves in hot water in terms of the section of the law that deals with the provision of security and training. The rendering of humanitarian assistance to other countries may only be affected with government approval. The Act succinctly defines mercenary activity as "direct participation as a combatant in armed conflict for private gain."

In terms of the criteria specified for the authorisation of military assistance to a foreign government, this would not be granted if it were found that such assistance was "... in conflict with the Republic's obligations in respect of international law, or result in the infringement of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the territory in which the foreign assistance is to be rendered. Nor would any activity receive government sanction if it would endanger the peace by introducing destabilising military capabilities into the region where the assistance is to be, or is likely to be, rendered or would otherwise contribute to regional instability and would negatively influence the balance of power in such region." This includes the specific prohibition on the support or encouragement of terrorism, the contribution to the escalation of regional conflicts, or any action that is prejudicial to the Republic's national or international interests.

South Africa has a long and diverse history of interfering militarily in the affairs of other African states as a result of official government policies to destabilise the "front-line" countries of Zimbabwe , Botswana , Angola , Zambia , Swaziland , Mozambique , and Lesotho during the apartheid era. During this period, South Africa , with the possible exception of Egypt and, to a lesser extent Nigeria , was the dominant military power on the continent, and the only military power that had a tactical nuclear potential. White South African society was also very highly militarized and in the 1980s it was estimated that a full call-up of its total forces of regular troops, conscripts, commandos, and army reserves would total some 500,000 men and women. All white males were subject to conscription [known as "the draft"] into either the army, navy, air force, or police upon reaching the age of 18.

Beginning with the independence of the Belgian Congo in 1960, renamed Zaire , now the Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC], South African and European mercenaries, mainly French and British, have operated in many countries in Africa with almost complete impunity. These include Angola , Sierra Leone , Zimbabwe , and the Seychelles . Because of the thousands of men with military experience, especially those with combat experience, this country is seen as a fertile recruiting ground for these military-related activities - and it is in this context that the tough measures taken by the South African Parliament to curb the extra-legal activities of mercenaries must be seen and understood.

Other countries do employ foreign forces that could, by definition, technically be held to be mercenary. However, these are normally incorporated into the host country's armed forces infrastructure and chain of command. Their legitimacy is rarely raised as an issue and the historical relationship is generally one of mutual and shared interests. The most famous of these would be the legendary French Foreign Legion which is French-officered, but largely comprises foreign nationals from all over the world. Next to the Legion would be the renowned British Gurkha Battalions from Nepal . The Papal Guard of the Vatican consists of Swiss volunteers and has been for hundreds of years.

Finally, if South Africa has been responsible for letting "the dogs of war" out, it is certainly doing everything in its power to rein them in and to get them out of circulation one way or another. It is, in retrospect, clear that South African authorities knew of the attempted coup plot well in advance but declined to take action until the plane left South African airspace. Though somewhat conjectural on the part of the authors, it seems that a high-level decision was taken to let the mercenaries proceed and land in Harare , alert Zimbabwe to the actual purpose of the flight, then let that country arrest and detain the individuals and subject them to their own justice system, as a deterrent to others. This sends a very clear and powerful message to South Africans, especially those attracted to, or in the business of recruiting mercenaries: The risk-cost benefit analysis is not worth the penalties incurred if caught. And for those South Africans imprisoned in Chikurubi, and the Black Beach prison in Equatorial Guinea , there will be plenty of time to reflect on their stupidity for getting involved in such a half-baked venture in the first place.

Robert Mugabe: Can He Stand The Pressure of Imperialism

As the weight of the world bears down on Robert Mugabe and his sweeping land reforms, how will he survive? As usual, Britain and the United States are really giving Robert Mugabe a hard way to go. UN Sanction, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International are all in the mix to demonize Mugabe and his sweeping land reform programs. They call it the “fast track” to land reform. They would like the “slow track”, but it took twenty years, from the time of Zimbabwe’s independence until the year 2000 for land reform to start. Would you call that the fast track? Still Zimbabwe has been expelled from the British Commonwealth of States (so what, it’s just a neo-colonial tool to maintain control of Britain’s former colonies), suffered UN economic sanctions, and the mischief of diplomats, the corporate press, mercenaries and sabotage. The victims of a few billion dollars, a handful of NGO’s funded by mega-capitalists like George Soros and his cohorts from the European oligarchy of aristocrats who want to bring down any foreign government, political or economic movement for change that is bad for business.

This week the government of Zimbabwe threatened to expel the U.S. ambassador, Christopher Dell. Foreign Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi told a news conference he had summoned Dell and protested against his "undiplomatic" behavior for saying that the government was mismanaged and corrupt. Mumbengegwi said the U.S. ambassador was trying to incite a political revolt against Mugabe by attacking the government of Zimbabwe. The minister stated that the government of Zimbabwe would not hesitate to invoke the provisions of the Vienna Convention governing diplomatic relations should at "any time in the future the U.S. ambassador again act in violation of the laws of the country". President Mugabe responded to Ambassador Dell’s remarks by telling him on Tuesday to "go to hell". Perhaps, Hugo Chavez inspired President Mugabe when he remarked that he should “Go To Hell”. Hugo Chavez says that he was certainly inspired by Mugabe. Do you think that any “diplomat” in a host country in Western Europe would be able to say such things about that government and expect not to be expelled? They just have no respect for Africans. Their belief in their own superiority is clear when they say and do things like this. This is not about human rights or democracy, it’s about business and Mugabe is bad for business.

They are also infuriated with Mugabe because he has locked up one of their most useful Dogs of War, Simon Mann. Mann [with the glasses]was arrested in Zimbabwe in 2004 for illegally purchases arms and planning a coup d’etat in Equatorial Guinea. The government of Zimbabwe, South Africa and Equatorial Guinea with the assistance of the African Union foiled this attempt through their collective effort. It became a very embarrassing situation when the names of people like Mark Thatcher, son of former PM Margaret Thatcher came up as the financiers of the coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea. Thatcher was eventually fined and expelled from South Africa, which he had made his home and returned to London. The government of Equatorial Guinea wanted him extradited to stand trial for attempting to topple the government, but South Africa refused the request for extradition because Equatorial Guinea has the death penalty. The second Brit involved in the mercenary debacle was Simon Mann. Mann was a former British SAS officer turned executive/mercenary. His company Executive Outcomes returned Sierra Leone to the control of the diamond monopoly as well as helped to return oil holding in Angola to its British/Canadian interests. Simon Mann was captured, alone with almost 100 South African mercenaries by Robert Mugabe while they tried to purchase weapons in Zimbabwe and sleeps in a Zimbabwe prison as we speak. That kind of organization and purpose is exactly what the imperialist and neo-colonialists are afraid of. They would want to continue to empower an African elite that would continue to “work with them”, not for the people of Africa.

Because of the Mark Thatcher[pictured to the right] Simon Mann incident, South Africa is passing legislation that will outlaw any former member of the South African Defense Force from entering into any private military force, security force or foreign force in an effort to stop mercenary activities.

There is so much propaganda about Robert Mugabe’s land reform program that it’s very difficult to tell just exactly what is going on. But what is true is that Mugabe’s land reform has infuriated Great Britain, and their biggest ally the United States. We can't blame this diplomatic policy on the Bush Administration, Bill Clinton's Administration supported the same policy [it was just easier for us to believe there might by some truth to the propaganda coming from Bill Clinton]. The campaign to remove Robert Mugabe from office and return all lands to Zimbabwe’s White farmers is a number one priority. After all, what makes these African people think they can government themselves and control their own resources.

The truth of the matter is that Robert Mugabe did not begin the land reforms and he was fine with Great Britain [even though he had been president for 20 years] as long as he didn't do anything that was bad for business. It was the veterans of the war of independence that decided twenty years was long enough to wait and they were going to start the return of lands to the indigenous people of Zimbabwe themselves. Mugabe had a choice, to either go along with them or not. He chose to go along with them, which of course put him at odds with the international community. At issue for those twenty long years was: who would pay reparations to the White farmers? Mugabe believed that Great Britain should pay since they were the ones that brought the farmers to Zimbabwe in the first place. Great Britain wanted Zimbabwe to pay its own reparation and they went back and forth about this issue for twenty years—that’s not the “fast track”. The war veterans decided for themselves.

Anyway, you see the problems that could arise if they have to start giving things back and it has finally come to that. They are even more afraid that it will cause a domino effect throughout Africa [especially South Africa] or even the world. The fact is, that more white farmers have been killed in South Africa over land reform, some 1500 compared to Zimbabwe with only 10 White Farmers killed. It is just that the stigma of apartheid still looms over South Africa's heads and they are afraid that they will be looked at as trying to forge a neo-apartheid society. But Robert Mugabe is easy pickings [so they think].

Riots in France Now A National Insurrection

Well what do they expect after hundreds of years of French colonialism and slavery? How could they think that after hundreds of years of African exploitation that the chickens would not come home to roost. Now the French are concerned with how to keep their nation White. White nationalism is on the rise all over Europe as it continues to brown with miscegenation and immigration. At one time France was a haven for African-Americans escaping racism but the tide has obviously turned. The riots that have spread across France and into Belguim, Germany and Denmark tell a story of desperation for Afro-European youths who are themselves citizens, the children and grandchildren of immigrants from France's former Sub-Saharan African and North African colonies.

Bouna Traoré et Zied Benna (visit bouna93.skyblog.com to see their photos) were the two youths that sparked the riots, but it is now a forgone conclusion that France and the rest of Europe have been hiding a dirty little secret. It appears that the two friends were running from police and sought refuge in an electrical power station where they were electrocuted. The police claim they were not chasing the teens, but the rioters aren’t buying it and for the twelfth day, have let the whole world know just how much racial tension there is in Europe.

Despite the fact that these youths were born in France and are French citizens who vote and pay taxes, they are not considered to be fully French, in the eyes of many other French citizens. Discrimination is rampant in French society according to many of these youths. Once it is determined that they are not White, jobs are suddenly filled and apartments suddenly rented. Even those that have managed to get good jobs have been subjected to so much housing discrimination that they must continue to live in housing projects.

French unemployment is extremely high. More than 23% of the general population is unemployed but among Africans and Muslims in France the rate is more like 50%. They live in housing projects and slums much like Americans and have the same social problems—namely hopelessness. In addition to astronomical unemployment there is no political representation for people of African decent. As a young teacher in Clichy-sous-Bois remarked “it’s not like America where you have Black’s in government we don’t have anyone to speak for us here”.

More than 4,700 cars and buses are reported to have been burned in France since the rioting began and 1,200 suspects were detained at least temporarily according to French Police. There seems to be an all out war against French police. Youths have according to reports been snipering police as the rioting continues.

At the time of this report the rioting in France has spread to 300 cities and towns and has become a national insurrection. Jacque Chirac has declared a state-of-emergency and tonight a dusk to dawn curfew will be in affect in France. Chirac says that the issues of concern to the youths will be addressed but “law and order” must be restored although the Army has not yet been called in. The Guardian Newspaper in London reported that attacks have now spread outside France for the first time, with five cars torched in Belguim outside Brussels' main train station.

We will stay on top of this story as it unfolds and all of Europe holds its breath.

Hugo Chavez - His Battle With Imperialism

It’s been a long time since Washington has had its knickers in a twist the way they do over Hugo Chavez. It was much to President Bush’s dismay when he arrived in Mar Del Plata, Argentina for the Summit of the Americas to find angry demonstrators tearing the town apart. Prior to the summit Chavez drew tens of thousands [so the mainstream media reports but it was most likely hundreds of thousands] to the soccer stadium for a rally that clearly illustrated his support throughout Latin America.

Chavez, of African and Indian ancestry rose to the presidency in Venezuela in a landslide election in 1998. Since then his mission to return land to the landless masses has been met with international disdain in much the same way Robert Mugabe has in Zimbabwe. The fact is prior to Chavez being elected to the presidency, 77% of the farmland in Venezuela was owned by the wealthiest 5% of the population referred to as “hacendados”. Who are the haciendados? They are the pure blood white descendants of Spanish Conquistadors who have been the overlords of the 88% African/Indian population of Venezuela for hundreds of years and they are not happy.

Since the Chavez election the haciendados have tried everything from well-financed demonstrations, a recall referendum, and cozying up to the Bush administration to finance and stage an unsuccessful coup d’etat. One of the organizations in opposition to Chavez, “Sumate” has been associated with both the Bush administration and the preacher that called for the assassination of Chavez, Pat Roberson. Its director Maria Corina Machado is pictured here in a White House photo op with President Bush. Sumate, which is funded by the National Endowment for Democracy, was involved in electoral fraud in February 2003. The majority of signatures collected by Sumate during the recall referendum to remove Chavez were actually photocopies [sounds like they've been getting tips from the Rebuplicans on how to cheat in an election]. In addition, Machado and her fellow directors of Sumate have been indicted and are awaiting trial for receiving funds from a foreign government to oust President Chavez and have recently been indicted for the murder of a Venezuelan state prosecutor.

Clearly in Venezuela, as in every other country in the Americas, race and poverty have a well-defined relationship. It is the whiteness of Venezuela’s opposition that illustrates this. The Opposition has been known to make racial slurs against Chavez, with regard to his African and Indian ancestry on the regular. Journalist Greg Palast who traveled to Venezuela in 2004 described one of the these opposition demonstrations as “One of the oddest demonstration I've ever seen: frosted blondes in high heels clutching designer bags, screeching, ‘Chavez - dic-ta-dor!’. One plantation owner griped about the "socialismo" of Chavez, then jumped into his Jaguar convertible”.

In addition to Chavez’s land reforms his oil reforms have upset the balance of power among the oil elite. Chavez up and decided on his own that he would set his own prices in a market that gave the friends of Dick Chaney and the Saudis the ultimate decision making power to do so. In addition Chavez wants to change the percentage of oil revenue the country receives from Phillips Conoco from 16% to 30% in order to fund the many social programs Chevez has put into place.

Chavez’s battle with imperialism has developed out of his refusal to be a puppet of the west and his courage and fortitude was evidenced this weekend in Argentina when he referred to GW as “Mr. Danger” and told him to “Go to Hell”. In addition, Chavez has formed a well-publicized relationship with Fidel Castro and there is talk of the two countries forming an alliance some time in the near future and even further talk by Jamaican PM, Patterson, of forming a union of Caribbean states, which would include Venezuela and Cuba. This has no doubt put Chavez on the Imperialist Hit List and he knows it. Still Chavez is not budging from his position. In fact in a recent visit to the states, Chavez went to Congressman Jose Serrano’s poverty stricken New York neighborhood and promised to cut out middle men in the oil business and sell oil to the poor at a 30% discount over the winter months.

The weeks and months ahead promise to be very interesting as far as Chavez is concerned. It seems that the Bush Administration is doing more to encourage the unity of the less powerful states in the Americas than Che Guevara ever did. If GW keeps it up all of the Caribbean, Central and South America will be a socialist state—Viva Bush!

Rosa Parks Dies at 92 - A Woman of Substance

When a tiny frail woman named Rosa Parks was on her way home from work that fateful December day in 1955, she was tired, too tired to relinquish her seat to a White man. Mother Dorothy Height said that Rosa told her that she was a “child of God” and that “any child of could change the world” that she was “tired of yielding to a system that was so unjust”. Julian Bond said that she was an “Icon of non-violence”.

When the trouble started according to Congressman John Conyers, Mother Rosa said she thought about Emmett Till and just couldn’t get up. “A woman with an aura like Mother Theresa always brought a feel of peace to the office”, said Conyers. “But Rosa Parks didn’t believe in total non violence like Dr. King”. Conyers recounted a story told by Mother Rosa about a man that assaulted Dr King. Kings response was to do nothing as the man continued to pound on him. “On that issue Rosa stood with Malcolm”, said Conyers “that self-defense was justified”. Whatever the reason that sparked Mother Rosa’s refusal to get up out of that seat, being tired, Emmett Till, or child of God, Rosa Park was the spark that lit our flame.

For eight years the price of freedom for Mother Rosa was “The Black List”[many of us know this list personally]. Due to endless death threats she had to leave her native Alabama and move to Detroit, Michigan, but even in Detroit she couldn’t find employment. It was John Conyers that finally gave Rosa Parks a job. Conyers was then the first African-American to be elected to Congress from the state of Michigan and felt he owed it the Mother Rosa. We all owe Mother Rosa. We owe her a debt of action.

It was only fitting that it was Rosa Parks that would be the first American woman to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda. From 8 pm on Sunday evening until 10 am Monday morning some two hundred thousand people lined up for a mile around the building to acknowledge her great gift to all of us. I was fortunate enough to be at the memorial service for Rosa Parks at the Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, DC. At the service it was announce that from this day forward at the consecration of all Deaconesses of the African Methodist Episcopal Church the name of Rosa Parks would be read alone with the names of ancient woman of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament.

To be honest, I really had no intension of attending. I had wanted to go to the Capitol, just minutes away from home but I thought to myself, “ I’ll never get in”. I made every excuse for not going but as fate would have it, I had an appointment just across the street from the church where her memorial service was being held. While at my appointment I watched the memorial service on C-Span.

Now I ain’t much of a church person but as I left that appointment I decided--for Rosa Parks I was goin’ to church. So I walked across the street right through the police and right up to the front of the church. There were hundreds of people outside but they had rigged up speakers so that those of us outside could hear the eulogy. I moved in a little closer to the church and found myself standing next to the hearse, which surprised me. I thought to myself, “I will stay right here”. There was a woman from Philadelphia standing next to me. She told the story of her youth on the eastern shore of Maryland—a hot bed of racism in the civil rights era. She told me of how her family had moved to Philadelphia in order to escape the regular attacks on African-Americans by angry Whites. She said to me “Miss Rosa was a brave woman, these kids today have no idea how it was. They just have no idea how frightening it was. How filled with terror we all were. Miss Rosa was a brave woman. God Bless her”. She wiped the tears from her face. “I came all the way from Philadelphia on the Greyhound and stood outside the Capitol all night. Then I made my way over here, over to the church”.

I was too embarrassed to tell her that my attendance had not been deliberate. That I had just happened over to the church and here was a woman that hadn’t sleep all night and clearly by her appearance had suffered to be there standing next to me. A reminder of what an ass I was. Never-the-less destiny brought me there. At that moment people began to leave the memorial service. The first person out of the church was Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld accompanied by his wife. The flash bulbs began to flash. Then came Republican Senator Bill Frist; Mastermind, Carl Rove; Home Land Security Director, Michael Chertoff and a host of other republican stalwarts and the usual politicians including Senator Ted Kennedy and Howard Dean. The crowd was silent as they left the church. Then Oprah Winfrey exited and the women began to chatter. The woman from Philadelphia said, “Look at Oprah. She looks beautiful doesn’t she?” Oprah did look great. Shortly thereafter came Marion Barry and the crowd broke out into a rousing cheer. Many people don’t remember Marion Barry had been at the forefront of the campaign against segregated lunch counters, a Freedom Rider and founder member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) long before he was mayor of Washington. Now it seems, as it has been in the past that the news machine berates Barry as a criminal and tax evader instead of the hero he truly is. He’s clearly been Black Listed [we should be saying White Listed since they do it] for many years so I’m sure that money problems are nothing new to him. But on this day no one could deny him his due as a genuine hero of the civil rights movement. I always say that when the White man goes to such lengths to destroy a Black man, he must be doin’ somethin’ good for us--so much respect for Marion Barry.

After Marion Barry came the members of Mother Rosa’s family and her friends and the crowd cheered again. Then came Mother Rosa herself in a box of what looked to be the most beautiful rosewood I have ever seen. As they placed her casket in the hearse I put both my hand on it, as did everyone who could reach. Of course the flash bulbs started popping at the sight of so many trying to reach out for a little bit of the spirit of Mother Rosa. Her spirit was clearly present. So every time you get on a bus, get a job, or get a visa remember Mother Rosa’s courage. After Katrina: Let Us Be Doers and Not Askers - Economic empowerment in the aftermath …

Now that the urgency and compelling moment in New Orleans have passed, there are news stories beginning to circulate that are designed to facilitate the passing from our consciousness of the New Orleans “refugee”. These stories tell us in the places where the government scattered the African Americans of New Orleans, the open arms and welcome is wearing thin. If the media is any guide, the implicit message is now: “If you are an African American whose home formerly was New Orleans forget about coming back, forget about returning to your familiar places. New Orleans is only a memory now, get used to it, get over it, and get on with your life.”
The United States is about money. While the powers-that-be may pay a courtesy call to a clamor for rights, it will only be rhetorical, not substantive. If the call for rights, fairness, and consideration is to have any strength and character we must act on it. We must turn sentimentality into action. If there is to be any weight to our demands for a meaningful African American participation in planning, developing and profiting from the phoenix that will become the restored New Orleans, then we African Americans must show up at the table with more than our hands out and our hope in the humanity of our fellow man. We must show up with more than a list of demands for a handout of 5% of this or 10% of that. In short, we must show up with capital. Let us approach New Orleans with the billions we could raise easily enough by asking a million or two million African American Americans to invest their tax refunds from 2005 in the rebuilding of African American communities in New Orleans. Instead of asking for contracts, we could make our own contracts. Instead of begging for housing to be made available for returning African Americans, we could build the housing that would be made available to our people. Money talks in America. Money is power and will compel those who would attempt to exclude us or to appease us with a few set asides to engage us. Not in dialogue (who needs talk now) but in active participation in the redevelopment of an American jewel. Aren't we yet tired of ASKING, ASKING, and ASKING?

It has been more than two months since Katrina rampaged the Gulf Coast and unintentionally destroyed the heart of African American culture, history and linkage to the Big Easy. While the hours and days that followed the disaster brought intense media attention and uncharacteristic outcries for the government to get up off the mat and do something, it also overtly revealed the mass poverty--the outcome of the market economy. But as the heightened attention from the mainstream media has begun to diminish, the focus on the government’s incompetence and un-preparedness in responding to natural disasters is waning. The calls for accountability are being lost as other issues distract our attention. Yet, our people remain “refugees” in our own country.

In the meantime, we are effectively being excluded from the real decisions about the future of New Orleans. Once again they attempt to relegate us to invisibility. One more time we are excluded as though we do not exist as if we have no aspirations, as though we are simply voices, lacking physical substance, without conscience can be easily ignored. But this time we cannot afford to not pay attention. We cannot allow ourselves to be distracted by other events, to be rendered beggars for scraps.

This mantra is repeated over and over and over. We are told landlords are jacking up rents, tearing up existing leases, and using the Katrina disaster as means to constrain the return of the poorer displaced citizens of New Orleans.

Insurance payoffs for those who had policies will enable them to rebuild. But the poor or marginal middle class who own no real estate probably have no insurance to cover even replacement. They will receive no rebuilding assistance. Landless, how will they return to a city that will price them out of its housing market? Once the African American is effectively denied the opportunity to restore residency in the city, what will happen? Will our investment in the city, its history, its links to the past, its position as a fulcrum of American culture be lost? More importantly, what happens to the individuals and families that will have to live with the knowledge of their forcible eviction at the hands of this compassionless government that in every other disaster has enabled people to return to their lives. Even after Rita and Wilma, neither Texans nor Floridians are being told: “You can’t come home”!
Yet, what is the response of African American “leadership”? President Bush throws down a promise for $200 billion to rebuild the Gulf, makes reference to rebuilding Trent Lott’s house “so he can sit on the porch”. Then he does his reprise of the Iraq re-building thing: Secret contracts, non-competitive contracts, suspension of Davis-Bacon wage rules (since re-canted) so that his favored crews can benefit from OUR tax dollars, while we are shut out and told to be patient, trickle down will come. But our lawmakers and leaders espouse the same tired old recipes about fairness and consideration, wait-and-see. If the Bush administration were inclined to be fair and considerate wouldn't that response be in evidence?
There is a call for a new Orleans Citizen Bill of Rights. This is a good start, but only a start. Let us never forget: the U.S. is about money. If we African Americans are to expect to be important players in the rebuilding of New Orleans we must be more than voices of conscience, we must demand more. There are African American city planners, engineers, developers, and builders. City building is not the province of Caucasians. There are African American suppliers, equipment providers. There are talented African Americans in every knowledge and skill category that will be needed to restore the Crescent City and to make it a place where ALL Americans have an opportunity to live. Yet how will this talent be brought into the picture and allowed the opportunity to participate fully in the redevelopment of the Big Easy and surrounding region? How will African Americans have any surety that we will also be able to profit from the rebuilding? How will we ensure that what was once a majority African American city will become so again as the redevelopment gets under way? How will we be able to affect the development process so that the number of New Orleanians below the poverty level is significantly less when redevelopment is completed than it was before Katrina humbled the city?
Asking and pleading with the Bush administration or with Governor Blanco will not answer these questions. Nor will showing up with an empty bag and a hand out ensure what should be a MAJORITY are at the decision making table. Let us not forget, the majority of the population of New Orleans before Katrina struck was African American. Let us start from this reality. Any representation in any dealing related to the redevelopment of New Orleans should reflect the pre-Katrina population demographic. Secondly, we African Americans must, finally, begin to put our money where our mouth is. The U.S. is about money. Everything in this system revolves around money, responds to money, and respects money. To thus ensure our meaningful participation in and profit from the rebuilding of New Orleans we must approach it with substance and money so that our words and our talent have a practicable effect.

Many of us have donated money, clothes, food and water to various charitable organizations to help those who have lost so much as a result of the disaster. If we African Americans can be so generous and magnanimous as to assist in the wake of a natural emergency, can we not also be self interested enough to continue our help so we do not lose our place in New Orleans? So that we do not abandon our people to the fate the government has already consigned them? We have had the Million Man March and the Millions More March. Let us get a million of us to invest in an urban redevelopment fund to give substance to our words, our calls and cries for justice for the African Americans of New Orleans.

Instead of asking, we will be able to say: “You know what? We will just go do this ourselves!” At that moment, African Americans will take responsibility for our own economic development and empowerment. Let us focus on New Orleans as being that moment. Let us take the helm to help determine the fate of our New Orleanian brothers and sisters instead of allowing the malevolent force to dictate what we can or can't have.

Minister Farrakhan calls for African Unity with Africans in the Diaspora

Saturday, October 15, 2005, which marked the 10th anniversary of the Million Man March was commemorated and continued with the Millions Move Movement March. The march was once again organized by Minister Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam and the Rev. Willie Wilson the National Executive Director. According to the LA Times, the Washington DC Public Transportation Authority reported that more than 367,000 people had used the Metro system (compared to the 800,000 report 10 years prior) to reach the march held again on the National Mall between the Capital and the Washington Monument. However, during the march it was reported by one of the speakers that 880,000 people had used the DC Metro. The DC Police refused to give any estimates on attendance. In any event the march although not as well attended as the original, was well attended none-the-less. One would estimate that about half the people in attendance used means other than the Metro to reach the mall so I would say that there were one million people at the event (which could mean that the original march had perhaps double the one million in attendance that was widely underreported).

It was a beautiful, sunny 75-degree day and the view of people stretched from the Washington Monument to the Capital and at about 10am the first speaker opened the rally. There were the usual elders from the civil rights era, Marion Barry, Mother Dorothy Height, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton as well as those representing the Hip Hop generation like Russell Simmons, Chuck D and Wyclef Jean, and Erykah Badu (although I have no idea what she was trying to say). They all made their way the podium. Wyclef Jean really shined with a great improvisational performance.

Up until about 2pm in the afternoon it seemed as though it was going to be the same old story—a whole lot of people being given a chance to bring up a whole lot of issues. Not that those issues were not important, the fact is that our issues with this nation are too numerous to be addressed in one day. Police brutality, the death penalty, education, gun violence, political prisoners and the war in Iraq are all important issues. Moms, Inc., a coalition of mothers who have lost their children to gun violence, police brutality, and the war in Iraq were included in the morning program. The National Jericho Movement, a coalition of more than 50 organizations including: The Republic of New Afrika, The New Black Panther Party, La Raza Unida, FALN, Los Macheteros, North American Anti-Imperialist Movement, May 19th, AIM, and the Black Liberation Army, had a very strong presence in the morning program. Their mission was to advocate for the release of all political prisoners inside the United States including: Mumia Abu-Jamal (currently on death row), Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin (formerly H. Rap Brown) and Leonard Peltier. But it was a lot to absorb in one day and people were starting to leave, especially those with children. What we truly need is an international agenda.
Then suddenly Native American Leader, Russell Means walked up to the microphone and made an offer that made many in the African-American community sit up and listen. “I want to propose an alliance. We Native Americans (Native-American consider themselves a sovereign nation within a nation) have some of the largest tracks of land in the country and we want to invite you to join us”. You could see that people who were leaving turn and start to listen. He went on to say that we should no long vote as democrats—as African-Americans have traditionally voted. That African-Americans should leave the Democratic Party that has achieved very little since the civil rights era and form our own political party with Native-Americans. He proposed that we use our votes on candidates that will advocate for our issues. This statement made many of our elected officials present at the march cringed with fear and loathing, but Russell Means didn’t flinch and continued with his message of change.

Shortly thereafter, by satellite broadcast, Jamaican Prime Minister, P.J. Patterson called for the unification of Caribbean States, which would include Cuba and oil rich Venezuela and Trinidad. Patterson stressed the need for collaboration between South American, Central American and Caribbean states to defeat imperialism and expose the insidious relationship between the US financial and banking system and the cocaine trade, which have developed into modern “narco- terrorism”(we will be doing more stories on this subject).

Then thankfully, at about 4 pm Minister Farrakhan bumped several speakers and performers and came to the podium, which keep the momentum of the international agenda going. In his speech he proposed a wide-ranging alliance of national and international leaders to create an international agenda including the United States of Africa. He went on to say that we could no longer afford to divide the issues of our brothers and sisters on the continent from those in the Diaspora.

On the home front Farrakhan reiterated Russell Means proposal for an alliance between Native, African Americans, and Latino-Americans. He then went on the illuminate the dismal response of the government to the plight of African-Americans in New Orleans. That it was time to take measures into our own hands and develop an infrastructure that would respond to our own needs. He then presented a plan to institution a separate infrastructure of institutions for African-Americans including ministries. He proposed Ministries of Education, Justice, Culture, Finance, Defense and Information (to end the monopoly on news and information by agencies such as Reuters, Associated Press, and United Press International) and proposed that soldiers of African-American, Native American and Hispanic decent leave the U.S. Army and form a separate defense force. In fact, he fell just short of declaring a sovereign nation.

Farrakhan followed up on P.M. Patterson’s statements in opposition to imperialism with a discussion on those who had been deluded by "the neo-conservative idea of American imperialist" (ideology similar to the social democrats of old). He then moved on to the international front and warned African leaders who were not in support of the African Union. Farrakhan was scornful of African leaders that were “dragging their feet” in the process remarking, “you’d better hurry up or be left behind”. He went further to say that Tony Blair of Great Britain had no right to “forgive” Africa anything. That Africa owed the world nothing that it was the world that owed something to Africa. That as an act of reparations for slavery and colonialism the G8 should: cancel all Africa’s debt, apology for slavery and colonialism, return cultural objects stolen from Africa and invest trillions in the building of roads from “Cape Town to Cairo”. That they should build bridges, water systems, new sustainable energy systems and other infrastructure. The idea that the G8 would forgive Africa’s billions in debt was a travesty. He went on to defend African leaders like Robert Mugabe for his sweeping land reforms and the efforts of the African Union (The African Union recently foiled an attempt by British and South African mercenaries to topple the government of oil rich Equatorial Guinea. At the head of the conspiracy were British citizens Mark Thatcher, son of former PM Margaret Thatcher and Simon Mann—the real James Bond. Simon Mann was captured, alone with almost 100 South African mercenaries by Robert Mugabe while they tried to purchase weapons in Zimbabwe and sleeps in a Zimbabwe prison as we speak. Mark Thatcher was arrested by the South African government and was deported as a result of the affair.), to exercise its authority.

The one subject, which was not addressed, was how to reach the Africans on the continent who are truly committed to African independence from the “Elite Pan-Africanists” in the service of the imperialists and capitalists olegarchy. While Farrakhan did address African Leaders not in line with the African Union as “foot draggers” he did not address their continued collaboration with the G8 nations that enlist pirates and mercenaries to achieve their global political and economic agendas.

In closing Farrakhan did address the “disconnect between the learned and the impoverished” and called for the development of a Skills Bank to connect those with skills to those in need. The Truth and The Lies About Amputations in Sierra Leone

For many years now it has been widely reported that it was the rebels of the former Revolutionary United Front that were responsible for the horrific amputations that occurred during the civil war in Sierra Leone. This was based largely on anecdotal information from human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch (funded by George Soros), Amnesty International, Global Witness, the U.S. State Department, Britain’s Foreign Office, the United Nation and many other institutions have overwhelmingly supported this belief even when evidence to the contrary became known. The amputees of Sierra Leone have suffered greatly and much as everyone would like to blame these terrible atrocities on the barbarism of a rebel movement, as the acts of bad guys against the good guys it is in fact not that easy. That kind of black and white analysis (we call it the cowboy vs. Indian analysis) is not applicable in this situation and every now and then, something happens to dispel the myth of the atrocity of amputation as an RUF exclusive.

Over the past eight years the amputees of Sierra Leone have organized themselves and have been acting together to help themselves. One of their leaders, Alhaji Lamin Jusu Jarka, was once the Chief Security Officer for Barclay's Bank in Freetown, before having both his arms amputated during the rebel invasion in 1999. You would think that their organization would have been ready and willing to cooperate with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission organized after the war, but they were not. In fact, in the beginning, the amputees refused to participate and threatened to boycott the commission until a list of demands were met by the government of Sierra Leone. The demands were simple. They wanted the same reintegration privileges promised (but not give) to ex-combatants--a bag of rice and Le 200,000 (about $100 at the time) to be given to each amputee at the end of every month. They wanted education for their children and free healthcare (hello!). But most of all they, just as everyone else, wanted to return home to the provinces of Sierra Leone and rebuild their lives. At the time President Kabbah of Sierra Leone pleaded for their participation. Without them, there was no Truth & Reconciliation Commission and although their demands were largely unmet they did eventually participate in the commission.

Three years after the institution and findings of the Commission, the amputees are still being ignored. Jarka is still very active in their campaign for reparations and the implementation of the recommendations of the Truth Commission that a “trust fund” be set-up to meet their needs. With those issues in mind Jarka did two interviews with the BBC and Radio France International to illuminated their plight, which is dire.
Unfortunately, President Kabbah did not see it that way. It seemed the President was in the United States at the United Nations General Assembly meeting and was deeply humiliated by the broadcast. Upon President Kabbah’s return to Sierra Leone, Jarka was arrested and dragged to the presidential residence at which time the president remarked that neither he nor the government had any money to give the amputees. And then in the heat of anger he remarked that some of them had been amputated because they were in fact “rebels” and “collaborators”. The president then went on to talk about his own victimization because rebels burned down his home. However, magically the President has built himself several new homes, as have many other government officials in Sierra Leone. In fact there is a regular home building bonanza for the privileged. All with money the government claims it doesn’t have.

So where is the money coming from? More importantly, what were the amputations truly about? Were there politically and economic motivations? The answer is yes. Political and ethnic differences are cultural universals. Africans are no different than other human beings with differences. Were political and ethnic differences used against the people of Sierra Leone for more sinister motives? Yes, the fact is that the organization that benefited the most from these atrocities was the diamond monopoly. The fact is that individuals on all sides of the war were, in the beginning, paid to carry out these atrocities-- in part to discredit a rebel movement but also to scare the population out of the diamond rich areas of the country. Eventually, after economic, political and ethnic hatred had reached its zenith, payment for the atrocities was not necessary and the blood ran hot and red and the human bonfires burned.

Eventually only the most fearless remained in the provinces of Sierra Leone. As a scar tactic amputations were a huge success. For years none but the brave would dare to travel the roads into the hinterlands. This tactic is not unusual or farfetched. Back in the 1980’s and early 1990’s (really since the 1950’s) it was clear that illicit mining was rampant throughout Sierra Leone and Liberia. Any child farming yams could pull a diamond or two up out of the ground. The monopoly would like everyone to believe that it isn’t that easy, but it is and it happens relatively often. Where once thousands of Sierra Leone’s participated in mining their God given natural resource by the end of the 1990’s the only people the monopoly had to monitor were the soldiers, the rebels, and their own security employees which fought regularly to hold their precious diamond rich ground. Many of those soldiers got very rich. If any of you are reading this article, you know who you are (we don’t know of any rebels who got rich but if anyone does please let us know). The monopoly didn’t care. They sent their agents to do business with all sides in the conflict. No taxes or export fees to be paid, no infrastructural promises of electricity and water to be kept, no so called “illicit” miners to chase after and the value associated with cut and polished diamond had increase by 150% in 1998. In addition the monopoly succeeded in having a UN resolution to stop the sale of “Blood Diamonds”.

The concept of Blood Diamonds is an interesting one, but to understand the concept of blood diamonds one has to know the difference between conflict diamonds (those acquired, sold and purchased in the pursuit of conflict or war) and illicit diamonds (those acquired, sold and purchased without the authority of the state). One might argue that the people of Sierra Leone had the right to mine their own land, because the level of corruption in government and the infiltration of the monopoly through bribery and other criminal means prevented the government from fulfilling its fiduciary responsibility to the people. However, because the UN resolution on “Blood Diamonds” included both conflict diamonds and illicit diamonds all mining, purchasing, import, export, and sale outside the monopoly are illegal. Coincidently the monopoly developed and put in place a laser inscription certification that only they do. What a coup (no pun intended). No more free trade of diamonds under the radar of the monopoly. Who has more blood on their hands than the diamond monopoly (or whatever name they’re calling themselves now) and its agents?

With regard to who bares the greatest responsibility for crimes against humanity, it is the monopoly. The Special Court and the so called “Truth” Commission, organized by the United Nations, United States and Great Britain were purportedly born in an attempt to bring those deemed “most responsible” for human rights violations to “justice”. The colonial masters have used their kangaroo courts over the past four hundred years to dehumanize us and justify their rape of Africa’s human and natural resources. They have called us cannibals--that was one of their favorites. They’ve called us barbarians, and devil worshippers. They sent their missionaries to convert us then their armies and their justice to control us. They have used our children as sex slaves, turned our women into prostitutes, and turned our men into "batty boys".

In the court and the commission's investigations it has become clear that all sides in the war are guilty of human rights violations. There are individuals from all sides in the custody of the court. However the reasons for the amputations and other human rights violation, the truth about who bares “the most responsibility” goes un-addressed. They should not be allowed to chalk the reasons up to simple acts of "barbarism by the uncivilized" when it was really much much more than that.

We hope everyone sees where we’re going with this article. The Special Court has not even considered prosecutions for corporate crimes and not a single White man has been arrested. There were many White men involved on both sides of the conflict in Sierra Leone. They mined and traded in diamonds for arms, sold arms, worked as mercenaries, and had no problem with working on all sides of the conflict. Instead they have used their NGO’s and Special Courts to prosecuting the grunts and scapegoats while the real criminals, the ones that supplied the manpower of organized criminals, the arms and financing go free. They are the root cause of the war.

All politics and ethnic differences aside (we Africans need to rise above this stupidity—we need each other in the struggle against imperialism and neo-colonialism) it was a war over a resource that is controlled outside of Sierra Leone. Anything that is bad for business will be attacked by organizations like George Soros’ Human Rights Watch or the British Foreign Office’s, Amnesty International. Soros and his cohorts from the European oligarchy of aristocrats can with a few billion dollars, some NGOs and a wink and nod on “the down low” from the U.S. State department and British Foreign Office bring down any foreign government, political or economic movement or change that is bad for business. They can seize a nation's assets through mortgaging and loans, and even get thanked for their “benevolence”. Soros and his cohorts can even bring down the United States government of George W. Bush. Not because they disagree with the Bush administration’s policies, but because Bush and his overzealous neo-con’s have let the “world domination” cat out of the bag. By making U.S. (and British) ambitions so clear, the Bush gang has committed the cardinal sin of giving the game away. For years, Soros and his NGOs have gone about their work extending the agenda of neo-colonialism so skillfully that hardly anyone noticed. Now a Texas redneck cowboy and a gang of overzealous ruff ridin' neo-cons have blown it". Thank you President Bush!

There is no reason why the people of Sierra Leone (after all the government is not just one administration) should have to bare the burden of reparations for crimes they did not commit. That is what will happen if the government is left with the burden. The monopoly and all its holding companies and juniors should pay the amputees of Sierra Leone, the way Union Carbide was made to pay for Bhopal, India. The way Volkswagen and BMW were made to pay for the Jewish holocaust. The way the tobacco industry has been made to pay. A $500 million dollar trust fund for the amputees would be nothing to the monopoly. They make that everyday. I hope there are some smart and courageous attorneys out there because the amputees of Sierra Leone need some justice and some reparations.

Hope for HCBU's

On Oct. 14, 2005, Xavier, Dillard, Tulane and Loyola formally announced the formation of a consortium that will allow students from the two HBCU’s to return to the Big Easy in January. Student from Xavier and Dillard will attend classes while administrators and faculty share office space on the two campuses of Tulane and Loyola for the spring semester. By attending classes on the Tulane and Loyola campuses, Xavier and Dillard will be able to collect tuition fees that are desperately needed if the two schools are to recover.

“We are extremely gratified to offer Xavier and Dillard universities our available space to help them through their rebuilding phase as we continue our own rebuilding effort,” said Tulane University President, Scott S. Cohen.

Loyola University’s President, Rev. Kevin Wildes said, “The New Orleans-area universities are a vital part of the state’s economy and higher education community. It’s imperative that we are all able to resume operations and welcome back our students in January 2006. At Loyola, we are committed to re-opening in January and we are also committed to helping Xavier and Dillard while they rebuild their campuses.”

President Bush also signs Two Hurricane Relief Bills for Affected Colleges (Washington, DC) – On Sept. 21, 2005, President George W. Bush signed two bills to assist Colleges and Universities affected by Hurricanes Katrina. The Pell Grant Hurricane and Disaster Relief Act (H.R. 3169), authored by Rep. Ric Keller (R-FL), allows the Secretary of Education to waive Pell Grant repayment requirements for students impacted by natural disasters. The Student Grant Hurricane and Disaster Relief Act (H.R. 3668), introduced by Rep. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), protects students from having to repay other types of grant aid under Title IV of the Higher Education Act such as Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) and funds through the TRIO and GEAR UP programs. However, President Bush has come under sharp criticism for suggesting to Congress that budget cuts should finance the recovery and restoration of areas and institutions affected by Katrina.

Congressman Harold Ford, (D-TN), had some harsh words for President Bush and the members of the GOP that would advocate for these budget cuts at Howard’s 138th Convocation ceremony. House Education & the Workforce Committee Chairman John Boehner (R-OH), along with other Committee Republicans, introduced the Setting Priorities in Spending Act (H.R. 4018) on Oct. 7, 2005, to repeal and eliminate 14 federal programs, which they deem that have inefficient, duplicative, or simply unnecessary. Programs that would be affected by the budget cuts include Early Childhood Education, Education in the Arts, Foreign Language Assistance programs, Prison Education Programs, State Grants for Incarcerated Youth and Women’s Educational Equity to name a few. In an October 17, 2005 press release, The National Education Association (NEA) stated its strong opposition to the significant cuts being planned as part of the budget reconciliation process – particularly those cuts that will affect the millions of students receiving necessary federal financial aid for their post secondary education. The White man giveth and he taketh away just as fast.

Hugo Chavez: Él Batalla Con Imperialismo

Era mucho a la consternación de presidente Bush cuando él llegó en marcha Del Plata, la Argentina para la cumbre de las Américas para encontrar a manifestantes enojados el rasgar de la ciudad aparte.
